Urunga - where the rivers meet the sea

Urunga is the seaside town of yesteryear. Boating and fishing are very popular in Urunga, and the riverbank offers ideal picnic areas, with shady trees and grassed areas.

The Kalang River that runs through Urunga has always been popular with tourists and locals alike, but it is also the location for industries as diverse as oyster farming, boat building and fishing.

There’s so much to do and see within the coastal belt of Urunga and it’s surrounds including: surfing, water-skiing, diving, fishing, mountain biking, bush walking, national parks, horse riding and canoeing.

As well as golf & bowling clubs and a hotel, Urunga has a comprehensive range of quality accommodation, from caravans to cabins, B&B's, motels or campsites and there’s something to suit any budget.

If you prefer to take things a little easier you could always soak up the atmosphere of historic Urunga, by taking a leisurely stroll across the wooden boardwalk that connects the town to the beach, or perhaps take your time exploring the local shops, cafes, winery and waterways.

Just around the corner overlooking the mouth of the river is the Ocean View Hotel. Established in 1927 it is a typical grand seaside pub which has recently been restored and refurbished. The view is outstanding and the hotel offers accommodation, a great enclosed ‘yard’ and playground for the kids, as well as a fine affordable menu in the Bistro and Dining Room.

Urunga also has a comprehensive shopping centre and several picturesque caravan parks. With it’s friendly community, relaxed atmosphere and unspoilt rivers and beaches, Urunga has something for everyone.

On the river to the east of the town is the Bellinger Valley Historical Museum, located in the old Literary Institute, a charming wooden building which was constructed in 1896, which is open from 10.00am-12.00pm, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Outside the Museum is the headstone of James Thrower (it is rare in that it is a headstone without either a grave or a body). The inscription on Thrower's gravestone reads:

'Sacred to the memory of Mr. James Thrower late master of the cutter Comet of Sydney who suddenly departed this life in a boat while engaged in sounding the bar of the Bellinger River. His vessel laying at anchor June 4th 1846.'

The town's Bicentennial exhibition tracing the local history from Aboriginal settlement some thousands of years ago is in the Urunga Library in Bonville Street and is open for inspection during Library hours.

At Urunga, you can do as much or as little as you choose.
